This summer, a limited number of scholars were invited to participate in the inaugural Natural Sciences Academy (NSA)—an offshoot of BSA—run by Dr. Jacqueline Smith. NSA scholars were introduced to research methods in physics, biology, and chemistry and completed multidisciplinary research projects focused on cancer prevention. They took a math course in the afternoon and participated in all other Academy-related activities.
Scholars who did not participate in the Natural Sciences Academy took two general education courses in small cohorts. The courses were linked using the Scholars Studio interdisciplinary learning model, which offers inclusive, community-oriented learning experiences that support students in expanding perspectives, making connections, and developing bold visions for the future. Course pairings included Developmental Math (MATH 90) or Pre-Calculus (MATH 141) and College Writing (ENGL 101), Health Education (HEED 102) and Computing Tools & Environment (CTEC 114), Intro to Philosophy (PHIL 101) and Oral Communications (COMM 101), Intro to Sociology (SOCI 101) and Intro to Education (EDUC 101), and General Psychology (PSYC 101) and Business Management (MGMT 101). Students performed well in their courses and completed an interdisciplinary final project.
